Streets of Rage Returns

Streets of Rage 4 Has Been Announced and We are Filled With Whatever the Opposite of Rage is!

There’s a moment in the soon to be considered classic film Rocky Balboa where the titular character, having lost just about everything that he has loved, reveals a secret to his last living friend Pauly. Rocky, with tears in his eyes, beats on his chest and says “there’s a beast in me”. That beast, I think, is the rage he feels over the death of his wife Adrian and his lack of a relationship with his only child.

I understand what Rocky feels. I know the rage that comes with the absence of that which we love. I know this because for 24 years all I’ve wanted was a fourth Streets of Rage game. Well, that isn’t true, but it makes for a hell of an opening, doesn’t it?

In truth, it’s been ages since I thought about the Sega made side-scrolling series Streets of Rage. The games were loads of fun, but they never quite found their way into the pop-culture lexicon in the same way Double Dragon or Final Fight did. Still, it was a solid series.

It looks like Sega agrees. Today they announced that Lizardcube – the developer behind Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap – and Guard Crush Games – who made Streets of Fury – are developing Streets of Rage 4. Lizard Cube is getting an assist from Sega will publish the game in partnership with Dotemu (who also published the latest Wonder Boy).

While we don’t have a release date yet, what we do know is that Axel and Blaze will be coming back in an all-new story featuring the classic beat-’em-up gameplay we all love.

Enough gabbing! How about some trailer fun!

Love that hand-drawn animation!
