High Score Interview: Aquinas Esports Player Sam “.samson” DeBruyn

Welcome to the High Score Esports College Players Interview Series!

Each week, we’ll be talking with, as the name may have tipped you off to, collegiate esports players. We’re starting off with the players of Aquinas College, and want to send a special thanks to Aquinas Esports Head Coach Adam Antor for giving us access to the teams.

Now let’s introduce you to Sam “.samson” DeBruyn, who plays Rocket League for the school…

What first got you into games?
I grew up playing video games. I started off with a Game Boy when I was younger, and that gradually evolved into an Xbox. Now here I am on PC!

What drew you to Rocket League?
I’ve always loved soccer. I’ve played it my whole life, so naturally, I’ve always been drawn to the FIFA franchise. After a few years of that, I got bored and started looking at other soccer games. My friend introduced me to Rocket League and I’ve been hooked since 2015!

Do you prefer to play a more defensive style or an aggressive style? Why?
I like a mix of both. Being one or the other often leads to weaker rotations, which is something that needs to be strong in a 3v3 environment.

What do you see as your team’s main advantage?
Our chemistry, consistency, and being able to hit the ball and pass with purpose.

Coming in as a Freshman and joining a new esports program, what excites you the most about Aquinas?
The community that Aquinas has created is very exciting. The sense of welcome and family that I received during orientation gave me a lot of hope for the next four years here.

When you’re not practicing Rocket League or studying, what games do you play?
I enjoy playing Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, and Uno with my friends.
