High Score Interview: Aquinas College’s Jenna “Jfr33ze” Davis

Welcome to the High Score Esports College Players Interview Series!

Each week, we’ll be talking with, as the name may have tipped you off to, collegiate esports players. We’re starting off with the players of Aquinas College, and want to send a special thanks to Aquinas Esports Head Coach Adam Antor for giving us access to the teams.

Now let’s introduce you to Jenna “Jfr33ze” Davis, who plays support in League of Legends…

What first got you into games?
What first got me into video games was watching my brother play them. Eventually, he convinced me to start playing with him and I quickly realized why he enjoyed them so much. There was something about strategizing and competing that I really liked. I had played softball from a young age and from that I learned how competitive I was. So it was fun to spend time with him and compete against him doing something we both enjoyed.

What drew you to League of Legends?
I started playing League of Legends a little under two 2 years ago, at first it was just for fun, but about 3 months ago I started playing a lot more in a competitive sense. I had watched the finals for League in 2018 and it seemed more interesting compared to other video games. It was unique to watch how each player had a specific playstyle, but everyone’s playstyle meshed to create a cohesive and dominant team, and I knew that that was what I wanted to be a part of.

Which character do you play? What is it about them that you like?
My favorite character to play in the support pool would have to be Morgana. She is a strong support and has crazy pick potential. I like the versatility she has as she can play safe in lane or be aggressive. Support pool aside, my favorite champion would have to be Ahri. Her burst kit makes her fun to play and her ultimate is flexible in a way to secure kills or escape from being killed.

Do you prefer to play a more defensive style or an aggressive style? Why?
I personally like to be more aggressive, but it ultimately depends on how my ADC likes to play the lane. The champ selection normally determines if I will be aggressive or defensive; I normally play hard engage supports with our team comp so I tend to be more aggressive on supports like Morgana, Nautilus, Thresh, Rakan, and Leona.

What do you see as your team’s main advantage?
One of our biggest advantages would be how well we work together. I think it is super important to have a good synergy between each player, as we already have the two brothers (J.R. “Bleu J” McCutcheon and Walter “Kealan” McCutcheon) on the team that have an incredible jungle/mid synergy. Each person on our team is strong enough to win lane, but what takes us to the next level is how well we synergize and compete alongside each other. What is super beneficial to us is how we strategize before games and converse after games to see what we did well and what we need to improve on. I think it is important to create a strong relationship and be comfortable with everyone on the team, as we all have taken the time to do.

What advice do you have for younger players who are hoping to join a college team?
Don’t be afraid to reach out! Take advantage of the opportunities you are given and always give your best effort. When you are given an opportunity to prove your worth, be respectful and listen to whatever feedback you are given. If at first you aren’t successful, don’t be discouraged but take some time to reflect, and come back with double the energy and passion.

When you’re not practicing LoL or studying, what games do you play?
I really enjoy some of the classics like Black Ops 2, Halo, and of course Minecraft. Some of my friends have recently got me into The Mean Greens and Elder Scrolls Online. Sometimes, if I am in the mood, I’ll grab out my guitar and play some Guitar Hero, because who doesn’t like a good throwback? One day, I will play Escape from Tarkov with Kealan, as he is always trying to get me to play it with him.
